My name is Steve Hawe. In 2004, my wife and I and the bank bought the Rogers' old family property, ‘Spring Plains’, west of Longreach. Although terribly run down and neglected since they’d passed it on in the eighties, I’m sure Kevin would smile now when he looks down upon its rejuvenation.
On successive visits ‘back home’, always with Judy, on one memorable occasion with Ann and nephew Kenny and sons, I came to admire his laconic wit, sharp memory and bush wisdoms. Also, his care and respect for the sad remnants left behind by the original custodians, the Iningai people.

Although deeply saddened by Kevin’s passing, I feel humbled to have been counted for the briefest of times amongst such a gentleman's friends. If time allows, I would like to recount a brief anecdote from our first meeting. Shortly after Denise and I, Becky and Kate moved into the old house, Kevin and his nephew Jeffery paid a visit. Shortly after they left, Kevin called back on the two-way to tell me he’d pulled the dip-stick out of his old Fordson tractor, and got Jeffery to give it a crank or two. It took some time for me to appreciate the subtlety of that brief exchange, namely, it takes a battler to know one! Yes, we didn’t have a tractor. And yes, after a visit to Toobrack for parts, we got his old, beloved kero-burner fired up. Thanks for the ride, Kevin, from the bottom of our hearts.
Steve and family.
